The Advantages of Optefex Cylindrical-Lens Streak Filters Over Traditional Surface-Etched Streak Filters: Blue Streak Filters, Red Streak Filters, Green…

Blue Streak Filter

The immediately apparent benefit of new Optefex Streak Filter construction is that camera operators can go far beyond the use of typical Clear Streak Filters and employ a broad range of brilliant colors, from the popular Blue Streak Filter to the Red, Green, Violet, Pink, Orange, and Yellow Streak Filters, all of which are easy to use, affordable, and matte-box-friendly. But that isn’t the only benefit. Let me explain.

The decades-old Surface-Etched method of Clear Streak Filter construction uses acid to etch a series of thin lines into the exterior surface of a clear glass filter. By their nature, these lines can only imperfectly simulate a partially cylindrical lens shape as they are actually just troughs carved into the glass and cannot become completely cylindrical. In fact, they rarely form even a semi-cylindrical profile, and are more often relatively irregular in shape and texture. By contrast, the Optefex method of embedding consistently smooth, and fully cylindrical lenses within the glass allows for far more efficient light refraction, and produces cleaner, brighter, clearer, stronger, and more effective streaking flare lines. And instead of being on the vulnerable and dirt-prone surface like with etched filters, they are safely and cleanly contained within the glass.

That said, Optefex Streak Filters do have a function familiar to those who have used the traditional Surface-Etched filters. The lines as well as the lenses on both of these types of filters produce Streaks that emanate in perpendicular fashion; in other words, in the usual application, vertically oriented cylindrical lenses or lines produce horizontally oriented Streaks. Optefex Streak Filters are typically used in matte boxes that can provide for rotation to further align the effect as needed, while the user is careful to select the size and aspect ratio so as to avoid vignetting.

Optefex has greatly improved the Streak Filter, while maintaining traditional standards of high quality.Optefex filters are made with optical-grade water white glass. They are made to your order: you select the desired combination of Color (Blue, Green, Red, Violet, Pink, Orange, and Clear); Strength (from 1mm line spacing for the broadest and longest to 4mm for the finest and shortest); and Size (choose from several standard square or rectangular sizes including 3x3, 4x4, 4x5.650, 5x5, 5.65x5.65, and 6.6x6.6). Round sizes will also be available in the future.

Optefex Clear Streak Filters have strong advantages over Surface-etched Streak Filters. In addition, Optefex Blue Streak Filters and our range of Color Streak Filters can significantly enhance your creative possibilities. All you have to do is to give them a try.

Optefex Blue Streak Filters: The Viable Anamorphic Alternative For Blue Streaks

by Admin 23. December 2011 08:09

Until recent years there were no Blue Streak Filters and the only way to create an anamorphic blue streak effect was to use an anamorphic lens. Then along came two different systems that allowed the creation of blue streaks when not using anamorphic lenses. The first development involved digital technology for producing blue streaks in post. This isn’t a solution for everyone: 1) it can be very expensive, 2) it doesn’t provide the cinematographer in-camera control, and 3) it doesn’t appeal to those who prefer the more organic look produced by the anamorphic lens.

A second non-anamorphic blue streak system was developed in Europe: an expensive filtration device. Like the digital blue streak technology, this system also has limits: 1) it doesn’t work with most matte boxes, and 2) the high cost of this European filter system is prohibitive—many rental houses never invested in one system, let alone more than one for multiple-camera shoots.

Then, along came Optefex with a new approach, providing high-quality, easy-to-use, affordable Streak Filters that make not only brilliant Blue Streaks, but Red, Pink, Violet, Green, Yellow, Orange, and Clear Streaks, and all available in four strengths. These Clear Streak filters create Streaks of whatever colors the lights are in the shots. Different color Streak Filters can be combined to make multi-Colored, multi-point Star filters. However, Optefex also offers their range of Colors (or multi-Colors) in different strengths in four-point Star filters.

Optefex Streak filters and Star filters come in standard industry sizes, including 3”x3”, 4”x4”, 4”x5.65”, 5”x5”, 5.65”x5.65”, and 6.6”x6.6.” Round sizes will be introduced soon.

Ultimately, Optefex has made it easier to create and control Blue Streaks than it is by using anamorphic lenses and also more cost effective than it is by using the other two alternative methods. Plus Optefex allows for the ability to create sharp, bright streaks and stars in a variety of brilliant Colors and combinations of Colors, and in several strengths. Optefex is truly the viable anamorphic streak alternative.

Optefex™ Special Effects Filters

by Admin 15. December 2011 11:06

Optefex™ Filters announces a new line of 'customizable' special effects filters. The first series includes a cost-effective version of the anamorphic blue streak effect. The special manufacturing method used by Optefex™ yields sharper, brighter lines than traditional etched-line star and streak filters. Beyond Blue, you can also take your pick from among six additional standard colors, Green, Red, Orange, Yellow, Pink and Violet, as well as Clear. Custom colors can be made available on request.

Options include four-point star patterns in the same range of colors and clear. Both star and streak effects are available in a choice of strengths, denoted by “mm” dimensions familiar to star filter users in 1, 2, 3, and 4mm,where the lower the number, the stronger the effect. Optefex™ Color/Clear Streak filters may be combined to create multiple-point star effects, using two or more colors together at a variety of different angles for further creative applications.Another example: two four-point Star filters can create a dual-color eight-point star effect.

A unique feature: creating colored star-streaks from white lights makes lighting more dramatic, without the use of gels and without coloring the scene the lights are illuminating. Another is to use large highlights, like windows or fluorescents, to generate broad, softly color-tinted shadow and flare effects.

Optefex™ filters are available in several standard sizes, from 3”x3” to 6.6”x6.6” with others available on request. Look for new effects coming soon.
